Etymology: after Dr. Johann Friedrich Gustav von Eschscholtz (1793-1831), Latvian or Estonian surgeon,
who came with the Russian expeditions to the Pacific coast in 1816 and 1824 + "of California"
[Note spelling of genus; "t" of Eschscholtz is omitted, although his name was actually spelled variously.
Chamisso, the author of Eschscholzia californica, is the eponym of our Camissonia and Camissoniopsis (Onagraceae).]
