Basionym Protologue from Bull. Calif. Acad. Sci. 1(4): 204-205 (1885)

K. maritima. Erect, a, span to a foot high, intricately and compactly branching: leaves linear, an inch long, setose with short bristles: spikes elongated, with only here and there a leafy bract: calyx a line [ca. 2.2 mm] long, short-bristly, not villous: nutlet solitary, hardly a half line long, dark brown and shining, ovate-lanceolate in outline, ventral face flat, the closed groove terminating in a triangular or roundish scar. K. ramosissima, Gray, 1. c. as to the plant of Guadalupe Island. First collected by Dr. Palmer, in 1875, and again by the present writer, April 26, 1885.       This and the preceding all fall into line with K. oxycarya and K. microstachys, with which they agree in the character of a solitary, smooth and shining nutlet.

In all these results, Cryptantha maritima is part of a well-supported "Maritimae" clade with C. clokeyi, C. martirensis, C. muricata, the South American C. subamplexicaulis, and (in Simpson et al. 2017) Cryptantha echinosepala [J. echinosepala]. Three of these are in Johnston's series Muricatae (K-Mur); C. maritima and C. echinosepala is in his Maritimae (K-Mar in Mabry and Simpson 2018); C. subamplexicaulis is in his Barbigerae (K-Bar).
