Note from Hoover 1970, p. 245: "No large-flowered plants could be found in the white hills on the north side of Cuyama Valley in 1967, although small-flowered A. tessellata was abundant. There is thus reason to suspect, as with A. furcata, that the type collection is erroneously labelled."
